At least 18 bodies of the 19 people onboard the Shaurya Airlines plane recovered after it crashed during its takeoff at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal’s Kathmandu on Wednesday.
The aircraft burst into thick flames after it skidded off the runway within minutes while taking off around 11 am. The plane, en route to Pokhara, was carrying crew and technical staff.
A security official deployed at the airport informed that the pilot of the aircraft has been taken to hospital for immediate medical attention.
Police personnel and firefighters are currently at the spot and an investigation regarding what caused the fire is yet to be ascertained.
The Tribhuvan International Airport is a tabletop airport located on top of a plateau nestled amidst deep gorges and valleys all around. It is regarded as one of the riskiest airports in the world.
Nepal air industry also has a record of worst air safety worldwide owing to poor safety due to insufficient training and maintenance.
In 2023, a Yeti Airlines crashed in Pokhara that killed all 72 passengers onboard, including five Indians. In addition, all 167 people aboard a Pakistan International Airlines plane died when it crashed on approach to Kathmandu airport. This was Nepal’s deadliest air accident since 1992.
